Strategic Investments in Enugu Air
In November 2024, Governor Peter Mbah unveiled a proposed budget of N971 billion for 2025, dedicating N41.1 billion to the transportation sector. This allocation includes the acquisition of four new aircraft for Enugu Air, the concessioning of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, and the development of an international cargo terminal. These initiatives reflect the administration’s commitment to bolstering the state’s aviation infrastructure and positioning Enugu among the top three states in Nigeria by Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Enhancing Passenger Traffic
The introduction of Enugu Air is expected to significantly boost passenger traffic at Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport recorded less than 1,000 passengers weekly. However, with the entry of multiple airlines, including United Nigeria Airlines, passenger traffic surged to between 6,000 and 7,000 weekly. The addition of Enugu Air is anticipated to further increase these numbers, making the airport a bustling hub for both domestic and international travelers.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The establishment of Enugu Air and the associated infrastructure projects are projected to create over 11,000 skilled and semi-skilled jobs for the youth in the state. The first phase of the Transport Infrastructure Project includes the construction of bus terminals, transport interchanges, logistics hubs, city gates, and rail stations across the state. These developments are expected to attract at least N47.5 billion in investments, significantly boosting the state’s economy.
Collaborations and Partnerships
To ensure the success of Enugu Air and the enhancement of the state’s aviation sector, the Enugu State Government has been actively seeking partnerships with established airlines and aviation institutions. In August 2023, the government concluded plans to partner with Ethiopian Airlines to train Enugu youths at the Ethiopian Airlines Aviation University. This collaboration aims to equip the state’s workforce with the necessary skills to support the burgeoning aviation industry.
Furthermore, United Nigeria Airlines has expressed intentions to establish a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Akanu Ibiam International Airport. This facility will reduce the need for aircraft maintenance abroad, thereby saving costs and creating local employment opportunities. The project is pending approval from the state government and allocation of suitable land at the airport.
Infrastructure Upgrades at Akanu Ibiam International Airport
Recognizing the need for modern infrastructure to support increased air traffic, the Enugu State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has set up a committee to oversee the completion and operationalization of the international terminal, as well as the construction of a cargo terminal and warehouses at Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Governor Mbah has set ambitious targets of achieving 100 flights per day and attracting 3 million visitors annually, underscoring the state’s commitment to becoming a major aviation hub.
Future Prospects
The introduction of Enugu Air, coupled with strategic investments in infrastructure and partnerships, positions Enugu State on a trajectory towards becoming a significant player in Nigeria’s aviation industry. These initiatives are expected to not only enhance connectivity and passenger experience but also drive economic growth through job creation and increased investment.
As Enugu Air prepares to take to the skies, the state’s vision of transforming its transportation landscape and boosting its economy through aviation is becoming a tangible reality. The collaborative efforts between the government, aviation stakeholders, and international partners are set to usher in a new era of prosperity and development for Enugu State.
