TAP AIR PORTUGAL OBTAINS IATA ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION

By earning IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) accreditation, TAP Air Portugal and Portugália Airlines are commemorating a significant turning point in their dedication to environmental sustainability. Both airlines have received their first environmental accreditation of this kind, demonstrating their dedication to implementing ethical and sustainable flying procedures.

By putting plans and practices in place that minimize the environmental impact of their flight operations and facilities, including corporate buildings in Portugal, the airlines were able to obtain the IEnvA accreditation, which is based on the ISO 14001 standard.

“This certification is a significant milestone in our continuous sustainability process. TAP Air Portugal CEO Luís Rodrigues stated, “We are dedicated to setting an example, minimizing the environmental effects of our operations, and encouraging more responsible aviation.” “This acknowledges our teams’ collaborative efforts and TAP’s continued dedication to the planet’s future.”

AIR PORTUGAL….

TAP has made a number of actions to strengthen its commitment to sustainability, including obtaining IEnvA certification. The airline carried on with its fleet modernization and renewal effort in 2024, swapping out outdated airplanes for newer models that use less fuel and emit less carbon emissions. TAP has also made investments to establish electric charging stations on the TAP Campus, which are also accessible to staff members, and has gradually replaced its fleet of corporate and operational vehicles with electric or hybrid versions.

The Sustainable Cabin project is another significant endeavor. TAP has partnered with Cateringpor to recycle garbage produced on aircraft that arrive in Lisbon. The active involvement of cabin staff is essential to the project’s success and is dependent upon their engagement. On its long-haul flights, TAP has also started using recyclable and reusable cutlery in economy class.

TAP will refuel at airports in the UK, Switzerland, and the EU this year using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airlines operating flights to those locations must utilize at least 2% SAF starting in 2025.

SAF is a significant step toward reducing the environmental effect of the aviation sector, despite its higher cost. With the exception of domestic flights, TAP will impose a SAF surcharge on departures from European airports in order to partially offset the higher costs. In Europe, this extra is €2 (£1.65) for Economy class and €24 (£19.80) for Business class on transcontinental flights.

The accomplishment of IEnvA certification demonstrates TAP Air Portugal and Portugália Airlines’ continued dedication to making a significant and long-lasting contribution to the aviation industry and society.

TAP Air Portugal won the World Travel Awards’ 2024 Best Airline to Africa, 2024 Best Airline to South America, 2024 Best Airline to Europe, and 2024 Best Airline to South America titles.
